Body Positive: Health & Fitness Tips for Teens

Body Positive

Here are a few tips on how to get started on your path to becoming a “body positive” teen.

  • Tip #1
Do NOT step on the scale. Obsessing over the numbers causes many teens to misplace their focus when developing sustainable healthy habits.
  • Tip #2
Let go of guilt. Creating healthy habits takes time and patience.
  • Tip #3
Release expectations and be present in the process.
  • Tip #4
List three things you’d like to change and three habits that could inhibit that change. Be specific.
  • Tip #5
Based on lists from #4, create 3 personal rules to help you reach your goals and write them down!

The first step to reaching your health and fitness goals is to create a positive body image — adopting a “body positive” mindset. Basing goals on physical appearance or how you perceive yourself compared to others does not build self esteem, and it is not sustainable.

A healthy body image or body positive mindset is created by the practice of self-acceptance and self-love — setting realistic goals in order to achieve a healthier mind and body. Always remember that your self-confidence is a very personal matter and should not be based on society standards.

Being healthy and feeling good about yourself should be the goal, which is not contingent upon appearance. Acknowledge that when you give your body what it needs to be healthy, that goal is quite attainable. Your overall health and wellness is key — and every “body” is different!

Focus on finding things that give you energy and make you feel good about you.
